El concierto en el Festival de Monterey 1979 fué el gran homenaje a Woody Herman, este gran maestro de bigbands, que con sus distintas formaciones casi un medio siglo estaba presente en los escenarios de jazz como Count Basie y Duke Ellington. La introducción hizo Dizzie Gillespie y con él se integraban en Woody's "Young Thundering Herd" Woody Shaw, Slide Hampton y Stan Getz.
